VAR Controversy Overshadows Milan Derby as Tensions Flare
Multiple contentious decisions lead to heated exchanges between managers in a fiery Derby della Madonnina.
The Milan derby between Inter and AC Milan descended into controversy as three separate VAR decisions sparked furious reactions from both sets of players, staff, and supporters.
The match, which ended 2-2, saw referee Daniele Orsato consult the pitchside monitor on four occasions, with three of those reviews resulting in goals being disallowed or penalties awarded.
Inter had a goal ruled out in the first half for a marginal offside call against Lautaro Martinez, while AC Milan were awarded a penalty after a lengthy review for a handball that many felt was harsh.
Inter manager Simone Inzaghi was visibly furious at full-time: "The technology is supposed to help referees make correct decisions, but what we saw tonight was confusion and inconsistency. The offside call against Martinez was millimeters - this is not what VAR was designed for."
His counterpart Paulo Fonseca took a different view: "I think the officials got most of the big decisions right. VAR is there to correct clear and obvious errors, and that's what happened."
The Italian Football Federation has announced a review of VAR protocols following increasing criticism from clubs, managers, and fans. The controversy has reignited the debate about the implementation of the technology in Serie A.
Despite the off-field drama, the match itself produced moments of quality, with both teams showing why they are considered among Europe's elite clubs.
